• Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell, who missed out on an Oscar nomination earlier this week, was named the Best British Newcomer at the London Film Critics' Circle Awards. According to ananova, Billy Elliot also won four other prizes, including Best British Film of the Year, Best Actress for Julie Walters and Best British Director for Stephen Daldry. Jim Broadbent was named Best British Actor for his role in Topsy-Turvy, while Being John Malkovich won three awards, including Film of the Year and Best Director for Spike Jonze.
• Warner Bros ups its efforts on the web today, launching a number of new Internet ventures, including the official site for the Harry Potter film. The company is also expanding its efforts worldwide. According to Variety, the company is launching sites for specific countries, the first being for Britain. Sites for Germany, Spain, France and Italy will follow later this year.
• The Onion, the satirical newspaper and website, has signed a deal with Miramax films to develop scripts and feature projects. "We're proud to welcome the Onion to our city with this first-look deal," Variety reports Miramax co-chair, Harvey Weinstein as saying. Onion chief Robert Siegel added: "The goal for this Miramax deal is to create movies that don't suck." The Onion, which was created as a free paper twelve years ago by University of Wisconsin undergraduates, now claims more than 1m weekly readers. It is also a rapidly expanding franchise. Two Onion books have been published and DreamWorks, the film studio run by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, has optioned two articles.
