After hip comedies Swingers and Go, anything less likely for director Doug Liman than a Robert Ludlum thriller could hardly be imagined. The result - starring an amnesiac Matt Damon and German actress Franka Potente - is efficient and watchable, but despite some impressive set-pieces, it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. Occasionally, a DVD commentary gives you a little scoop, like Liman explaining here that his surprise switch to spookdom came about partly because his dad ran the Iran-Contra investigation. He also enthuses that for his first studio movie, instead of getting "actors a bit like Brian Cox and Chris Cooper", he gets the real thing. His comparison to The Wizard of Oz seems highly fanciful, though.
