DVD review: Burn After Reading

It's as loose as the Coens' best comedies, but never quite as funny, writes Rob Mackie

After the dark and dangerous No Country for Old Men, it's back to a confederacy of dunces for the Coen Brothers. They had to do without DoP Roger Deakins for the first time in yonks, but Coenisms abound, from bad hairstyles (Brad Pitt cops it with a shockingly streaked barnet this time) to George Clooney completing what he describes here as a "trilogy of idiots". John Malkovich unhinges enjoyably as the uptight, bowtied CIA man whose bitter memoirs provide the plot's McGuffin. It blunders along enjoyably and then stops rather suddenly. It's as loose as the Coens' best comedies, but never quite as funny.
