Morrissey Presents The Return of the New York Dolls, Live From The Festival Hall 2004

(Sanctuary)

There is something vaguely comical (and typically perverse) about Morrissey's passion for the New York Dolls. Here is the quintessentially English king of baggy-cardiganed, bed-sit bound sensitivity losing his heart to a bunch of delinquent New York transvestite punks, whose only use for a bed-sit would likely be as a place in which to get horribly loaded.

Still looking ravaged by their own debauchery, the band made a Morrissey-promoted appearance at London's Meltdown Festival in June of this year. Captured in the camera's glare they seem grimier and sleazier than ever, thundering through a set of febrile rock'n'roll while teetering on a knife-edge of macho high-camp. Extras include rehearsal footage and a short film dedicated to late band member (and born-again Mormon) Arthur Kane.
