Where's your head at?
I've been doing press all day for the new film Three And Out, which is about a tube driver who witnesses two accidental deaths under his train and realises that if he sees another within a month he'll get paid time off from work.
Why don't you kill yourself?
It's a sensitive issue. It didn't occur to me that it would be controversial but it's actually an emotional tale of human relationships and friendships. It's not squeezing laughs out of tragic situations. So no, I wouldn't like anyone to kill themselves, especially not under a train. I haven't actually been on the tube since the publicity for the movie started. Hopefully I wouldn't be heckled off because I'm a big fan of London Underground.
Who do you think you are?
I'm blessed to be in the position I'm in, really. I don't know if other people know who I am. They normally say, "it's the guy from The Office" or "there's that guy from the TV", or "there's Gareth". But that's more of a blessing. I've never found that a curse. The day I get irritated by that is the day I'm in the wrong business or have forgotten my roots. At its peak I remember blokes in the pub insisting that you do Gareth down the phone to their brother. The type of person who asks you to do that is normally the sort of person who won't take no for an answer.
Do you like rock music?
Yes. In fact I was watching Nirvana DVDs this very morning and showing my five-year-old son how to smash up instruments. I was in a covers band when I was a teenager and we played half a dozen gigs in local pubs. They were probably more frightening than live comedy. I was the singer and I don't know what made me think I could do that. I looked like a girl with long straight silky blonde hair.
Who's that girl?
One of them is Kerry Katona, who's in the film. It was actually quite an exciting day when she breezed in like a... whirlwind. She was being followed around by a TV crew at the time, actually. And she did the part really well, took it seriously and it's quite an amusing scene. The other girl, of course, is the new Bond girl Gemma Arterton who is amazing and about to become a massive star.
What's new pussycat?
I've made a music video recently. It took me eight weeks to do, stop-motion animation growing seeds out of a synthesizer. It was for my sister's band who were releasing a single. It was all done down in my shed for next to no money. Anyone could have done it. It's had about 60 YouTube hits over the past year
Who writes the songs?
I went on at Wembley with Ricky (Gervais) to do his song Freelove Freeway. He wanted me to go out and then he said, "Well I'm going to say a few words and you can stay on with me so they don't have to applaud twice." So I thought, firstly, I wouldn't mind my own applause if I'm being perfectly honest. And, for some reason I don't know why, I did go off immediately and it's a good job because I'd have just been stood there looking like an idiot. I've heard people say he absolutely died but I think he did really well, considering.
Who is he and what is he to you?
I owe Ricky an awful lot, and Stephen Merchant as well. I don't want to think what I'd be doing now if I hadn't got that part.
Is this it?
Obviously not, I've got lots of plans and I'm having the time of my life.
