Pick of the week: Film

South: Three Monkeys | Bolt | Milk | Notorious | Doubt

Three Monkeys
Not quite up to the standards of his previous efforts (Distant, Climates), but Nuri Bilge Ceylan's latest off ers a similarly satisfying succession of ravishing images, beautifully put together.

Bolt
The next best thing to a Pixar animation, this entertaining pet adventure is the best option for the coming half term, as a naive performing dog takes his "superpowers" out into the real world.

Milk
Gus Van Sant doesn't let Harvey Milk's tragic death get in the way of a celebratory biopic of the maverick politician. Sean Penn disappears into the role superbly, and the 70s San Francisco gay scene is lovingly recreated.

Notorious
OK, it's not exactly an Oscar frontrunner, but this is more relevant than your average rise-and-fall music biopic, Jamal Woolard does a fine Biggie impersonation, and you can't go wrong with the soundtrack.

Doubt
Intelligent writing and powerhouse performances (count those four acting Oscar nominations) make this heated clash of the Catholics an absorbing treat. The lack of simple answers forces you to engage with it.
