Carlton International has sold to India the veteran comedy Carry On Up the Khyber, to be released on DVD and video.

The film, a spoof on the 19th century British Raj, features Kenneth Williams in tan make-up as the Khasi of Kalabar and Bernard Bresslaw as the tribal leader Bunghit Din.

Released in 1968, the film has latterly been frowned on as politically incorrect, racially stereotyped, and patronising. But on British TV it remains one of the most constantly reshown and beloved of the cycle of bawdy farces. Star Entertainment will distribute the film in India as part of a Carry On package. Yesterday its managing director, Jiten Hemdev, said: "The films contain the slapstick and naughty humour Indians love. Up the Khyber deals humorously with British colonial rule."

BBC2's Asian sitcom Goodness Gracious Me has proved popular on Indian television, and versions of the BBC's Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister in Hindustani are to be screened.
