Pick of the week: North : Film

Hellboy II | Man On Wire | The Wackness | WALL-E | Somers Town

Hellboy II
Making the Dark Knight look like a giant sulking competition,
this wildly imaginative movie combines magical special eff ects with an
irresistible sense of humour, not to mention a dash of Barry Manilow.

Man On Wire
A mesmerising account of Philippe Petit's death-defying
tightrope walk between the Twin Towers in 1974, perfectly capturing both
the vertiginous terror and poetic beauty of this meticulously planned event.

The Wackness
Party like it's 1994 with, er, Ben Kingsley. His stoner
shrink and Josh Peck's "mad depressed" young dealer make the least likely
buddy pairing of the year, in this likable New York coming of ager.

WALL-E
Robots have feelings too. In fact, they possess more humanity
than the humans in this delightful animation, which dresses its risky
dystopian themes in slapstick comedy and wondrous visuals.

Somers Town
Small but cherishable, Shane Meadows' latest captures
both modern multicultural Britain and the naivety of its youth, as a couple
of disparate London teenagers form a believable bond.
