The Independent has struck a deal with the Press Association to launch a video news service.

PA journalists will supply more than 100 video packages a week to the paper's website covering news, sport and entertainment.

Each package will be about 90 seconds in length. In addition a further 100 short 20-second clips appear alongside text and pictures.

The video clips will be integrated into the Independent website through tech firm Octopus Media.

"Working with the Press Association and Octopus ensures that we have a platform that can deliver video to our userbase that is both flexible and integrated," said the Independent's managing director of digital, Bill Swanson. "The range of content also enables us to position the player in more areas of the site, it is the next step in our evolution as we continue to try and enhance the user experience and relevancy of our site."

In May it emerged that PA had entered discussions with regional newspaper groups across the country about supplying video to news consortia looking to replace ITV local news services.

Earlier in May, PA launched its first video wire service to meet a growing need among national and regional newspaper publishers for daily video content.

Trinity Mirror's regional newspaper division and Guardian Media Group subsidiary MEN Media, which publishes the Manchester Evening News, were the first newspaper groups to use raw news footage as part of a free six-month trial of the service.

PA has produced video since 2005, primarily edited clips and packages aimed at the digital market, with clients including MSN and Tiscali. It has supplied broadcasters with footage on an ad hoc basis.
