Bertrand Bonello's last film to be released here was The Pornographer, which was a piece of silliness and conceit that almost passed comprehension. This is better: a resonant meditation on Greek myth, although self-indulgent and often alienatingly unpleasant.
A young man kidnaps a Brazilian pre-op transsexual prostitute Tiresia and blinds him, and Tiresia assumes the gift of prophecy. Roles are doubled, and images and ideas are emphatically, indeed pedantically underlined. Bonello is striving towards something laudably ambitious, though often misses the mark.
