British film actors set pace for Golden Globe awards

The films A Beautiful Mind and Moulin Rouge feature most prominently in the nominations for the Golden Globe awards announced in Los Angeles yesterday.

British actors, including Tilda Swinton, Judi Dench, Ewan McGregor and Ben Kingsley, also feature in nominations by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe as a maths genius who suffers from schizophrenia, is joined in the nominations for best picture drama by The Lord of the Rings, In The Bedroom, Mulholland Drive and The Man Who Wasn't There.

Among the best actress in a drama nominations are Tilda Swinton for The Deep End and Judi Dench for Iris, the film about the late Iris Murdoch. Sissy Spacek, Nicole Kidman (The Others) and Halle Berry (Monster's Ball) are also listed.

Will Smith is nominated for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali in Ali, along with Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington (Training Day), Kevin Spacey (The Shipping News) and Billy Bob Thornton (The Man Who Wasn't There.)

Robert Altman's Gosford Park is nominated for best comedy or musical along with Moulin Rouge, Bridget Jones's Diary, Legally Blonde and Shrek.

The best actress in a comedy or drama nominations are Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones), Thora Birch (Ghost World), Cate Blanchett (Bandits), Nicole Kidman, (Moulin Rouge) and Reese Witherspoon, (Legally Blonde).

In the actors list are Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge), Hugh Jackman (Kate and Leopold), John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Gene Hackman (The Royal Tenenbaums) and Billy Bob Thornton (Bandits).

Amelie has emerged on most lists as a foreign language favourite and is nominated with the Bosnian film No Man's Land, Monsoon Wedding (India), Behind the Sun, (Brazil) and Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too) from Mexico.

Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith are both nominated for best supporting actress for their roles in Gosford Park along with Kate Winslet (Iris), Marisa Tomei (In the Bedroom), Jennifer Connelly, (A Beautiful Mind ) and Cameron Diaz (Vanilla Sky).

Ben Kingsley is nominated as best supporting actor for Sexy Beast, together with Jim Broadbent (Iris), Jude Law (AI), Steve Buscemi (Ghost World), Hayden Christensen (Life as a House) and Jon Voight (Ali).

The best director nominations include Robert Altman, Ron Howard, (A Beautiful Mind); Peter Jackson, (Lord of the Rings) Baz Luhrmann, (Moulin Rouge), David Lynch, (Mulholland Drive) and Steven Spielberg, (AI).

· Moulin Rouge has been named top film of the year by viewers of BBC1's Film 2001.
