This is a brave film, if not a particularly sophisticated one, being far too long and gruesomely subtitled.
Its audacity will almost certainly result in its not being seen either in India or Sri Lanka, where it was made, since its story of an aspiring doctor caught up in the struggle between Tamils and Sinhalese shows little patience with either side. It also suggests that the Indian peacekeeping force were far from angels - something that hasn't been stated as clearly before.
The problem is that the film is essentially a halfway house between a more honest than usual Bollywood epic and something striving for rather more wide-ranging appeal. And its final hope, that it will convince us that violence begets violence, seems like a mammoth cliche.
