A decent lead performance from Peter Mullan can't rescue this derivative British heartwarmer, written according to the Full Monty/Calendar Girls handbook.

Mullan plays Frank, a Glasgow shipyard engineer who's made redundant by a new management team of heartless foreigners. So he decides to conquer his demons by swimming the English Channel, and he's surrounded by the regulation serio-comic set of friends and family who each, of course, have personal demons to overcome in parallel to Frank's quixotic quest.

Mullan aside, the script is just too pat, too easy and does nothing like enough justice to the wrenching physical agony of a 55-year-old man - or anyone - swimming the Channel.
