This knockabout black comedy from prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike is an example of how a certain type of comedy just doesn't travel.
The Katakuris are an ordinary family who buy a country resort for hikers, but find that their guests keep dying - and they have to dispose of the bodies and keep up a smiling face for the clientele as best they may.
It is shot with zany claymation sequences and pastiche fantasy-dance numbers, which maintain a surface level of liveliness.
The movie could be read as a satire of Japanese family values or consumer culture, but that wouldn't necessarily make it any funnier or more interesting.
A curious, indigestible meal of a film.
