Who Killed Bambi?

Xan Brooks: A slick Hitchcockian thriller, played out at a sterile hospital where shrieking nurses get chased down corridors and a loaded syringe lurks around every corner

Gilles Marchand cut his teeth as a screenwriter on Laurent Cantet's Human Resources and Dominik Moll's Harry, He's Here to Help. So it's no surprise to note that his first film as director is a slick Hitchcockian thriller, played out at a sterile hospital where shrieking nurses get chased down corridors and a loaded syringe lurks around every corner. Sophie Quinton stars as Isabelle, the lowly trainee who comes to suspect that handsome Dr Philipp (Laurent Lucas) is up to no good; tinkering with the anaesthetic and molesting the patients as they sleep.

Marchand handles his yarn with gusto, and Lucas and Quinton make an effective cat-and-mouse pairing. Even so, no half-decent physician will be stumped for a diagnosis here. Who Killed Bambi? bears the unmistakable symptoms of pulp exploitation, sending its imperilled blonde damsel through a ward full of buck-naked female slumberers who look as if they've been ordered in from a swimwear catalogue. Curiously, the white-haired grandma in the bed opposite is allowed to remain fully clad and mercifully unviolated.
