It is a well known fact that Steely Dan's music sounds 30% better in a car. So where better to experience their new album than in the back of a vehicle cruising the gaudy streets of Las Vegas?
Steely Dan Confessions is a special version of the cult HBO cable show Confessions, hosted by cabbie Rita. Next Monday you can buy the thrilling encounter (now appearing in short instalments on www.steelydan.com) as part of the DVD-Audio version of Everything Must Go (Warner), which also contains surround sound 5.1 mixes, and a stereo mix in 96kHz/24-bit "advanced resolution" sound.
After some initial chat, a series of female passengers join Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in the back seat of Rita's yellow cab. Lizzie, whose ex-boyfriend was a Dan fan, tells them how much she loves Reelin' in the Sheaves. "That was one of our best ones," says Donald. "How do you guys make sense without making sense?" she asks. Walter probes a woman for her reaction to the title Blues Beach: "You think of tranquillity, but it can also take you into a world of darkness." They nod sagely.
Another guest is a magician with a snake around her neck. An expensive "special edition" version of the CD is also promised, with a 22-minute DVD of Steely Dan Confessions. Extracts from the new tracks sound suitably gritty. Donald looks about as comfortable as Harry Caul, the Gene Hackman character in The Conversation. "Whaddya do for fun?" asks Rita. "Well there's brooding," replies Walter.
