If the Oscar buzz is anything to go by, 2012 is going to be a vintage red carpet season for Meryl Streep. The Iron Lady is out on Friday and we are most definitely not interested in getting the look or discussing whether Thatcher, with her pussy bows and boxy handbags, was a style icon or not. But we are always interested in Streep's red carpet style.
At the premiere in London on Wednesday night, Streep appeared to have absorbed the Thatcher colour palette into her own wardrobe with a royal blue coat by Lindsey Thornburg. Worn over a Stella McCartney black maxidress, the look had something of the Oxford don about it. Happily, the Fiona Paxton Pharaoh-like necklace watered down the academic vibe.
We were a little intrigued by those heavy Michael Kors boots. Yes, it was a gusty night, but surely she didn't get the bus to the British Film Institute? Perhaps Streep has ruled out simple black pumps for fear that they will be a little too close to Thatcher's own trademark Ferragamos.
Who are you looking forward to seeing on the red carpet as awards season approaches?
