After a brief introduction to the cliched characters, the battle of the title is a violent, over-amplified affair between a platoon of US marines and an overwhelming force of metallic aliens staging an all-out attack upon our planet to seize our water. American audiences are here able to exult in the destruction of an inhuman enemy and to indulge their paranoid fears of menacing foreigners gathering at the border and storming the beaches.
