They say the Farrelly brothers are growing up. You wouldn't know it from this crude dross, says Philip French

Hall Pass: lots of sex, precious little comedy… Photograph: Peter Iovino Photograph: Peter Iovino

These past few years have seen the Farrelly brothers spoken of as mellowing and maturing while their competitors have been left to push the envelope of gross bad taste. This terrible sex comedy (all sex and no comedy) is their attempt at a comeback. Two husbands experiencing the 10-year itch in suburban Providence, Rhode Island are let off the leash for a week by their irritated wives and left to indulge in whatever they wish, no questions asked. The result is an orgy of crudity that could only appeal to adolescents too young to be admitted. The only humorous scene occurs during the final credits.
