Hong Kong and the misery inflicted on its less wealthy inhabitants by inflation, greed and a laissez-faire housing system is the subject and the villain of this topical, would-be thriller. A young woman juggles three jobs in her efforts to buy a decent apartment for her family, and after constant frustrations she turns to murder. The overly clever construction works against making her a sympathetic figure, and the violence, while arguably not gratuitous, is excessive.
