Australia gets in a (very) late entry in the Sinatra revival stakes with a cheerful comedy, set in the early 70s and supposedly based on real events, about a gormless long-haired music promoter's attempt to bring the somewhat out-of-fashion crooner Down Under for a tour. This is the Sinatra of the tux-and-hairpiece era, and Ol' Blue Eyes is connected with his inner mafioso by the casting of Dennis Hopper in the role - a bizarre choice, no more evident than in the way he uncertainly lip-synchs in the concert scenes.
As tight-trousered promoter Rod Blue, Joel Edgerton doesn't get anywhere near the kind of straight-faced, chipper attudinising favoured in previous Oz cut-ups (see Paul Mercurio in Strictly Ballroom, or Eric Bana in Chopper); but he isn't helped by an incredibly sappy love story tacked on to the main action. The best (and funniest) scenes involve future prime minister Bob Hawke (played by David Field) who, as a union boss, is called in to negotiate with Frankie and his boys after Sinatra manages to insult the entire Australian nation.
