It's hard to get excited about this adaptation of Philip Pullman's 1992 novel, a putative reworking of Romeo and Juliet set in modern-day Oxford. Hardworking teenager Chris rescues pouty waitress Jenny from thuggish aristocrat Piers at a ball, igniting an overwrought romance. It's all very "young adult", but fails to generate much screen heat. It's all just a bit too safe.
