John Boorman's last film was the cringe-inducing South African drama Country of My Skull, which did not get a UK release. Now he has returned with this very bizarre doppelgänger melodrama set in the Irish Republic. It aspires (as far I can see) to be a parable of the thrustingly prosperous, but graspingly materialist new "Celtic Tiger" Ireland. Brendan Gleeson is Liam, a wheeler-dealer property magnate facing ruin as the banks are calling in his debt. Kim "Sex and the City" Cattrall more or less keeps her dignity and Irish accent intact as his sharp-tongued wife. As the crisis mounts, he is plagued by visions of an exact double of himself - with an English accent. It's a little like the old 1971 Basil Dearden movie The Man Who Haunted Himself, but without the supernatural tension. As Liam's empire unravels, the mystery of the double is disclosed. It's mostly silly, with some laboured face-pulling by extras in the crowd scenes. Some sparks fly in this drama, but not as many as you'd like.
