The Surgeon
9pm, Channel 5
Not for the faint-hearted, this new series follows the lives of working surgeons, starting with bowel cancer specialist Daren Francis. His first patient is retired nurse Doris, who worked for the NHS for 50 years, and has had excruciating abdominal pain for two weeks. As well as performing a squeamish and risky operation, Francis invites the cameras into his home and he opens up about what it’s like to tell someone they have cancer. Hollie Richardson
Kirstie and Phil’s Love It or List It
8pm, Channel 4
Kirstie Allsopp returns to Cullercoats in Tyne and Wear to catch up with Mark and Suze. When first visited in 2020, the couple were at a crossroads – would they fix up their Victorian townhouse or move on? Have they found their forever home yet? Phil Harrison
Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time
8pm, Channel 5
Seemingly attempting to earn the title of TV’s busiest professor, the presenter takes a break from touring Roman ruins on Channel 4 and hunting the holy grail on Sky History to profile St Barts hospital in London. First up, she heads to its archive to hear how one of its most precious artefacts is a scroll from 1137. Alexi Duggins
Landscape Artist of the Year 2026
8pm, Sky Arts
“I wouldn’t say everything’s going to plan. Far from it.” In the final preliminary heat, eight artists have just four hours to paint Dover Castle, Henry II’s medieval fortress, described as the “12th-century version of bling”. Styles range from neon-bright mixed media to pyrography and watercolour. Ali Catterall
Matlock
9pm, Sky Witness
Matty (Kathy Bates) and Olympia (Skye P Marshall) have to duck and weave again in their effort to gain control of the New York law firm where they work. At the same time, though, Olympia takes on a case that disturbs one of the troubles she has buried deepest: her relationship with her mother. Jack Seale
Unspun World With John Simpson
11pm, BBC Two
One of the last bastions of high-quality BBC news journalism continues his unheralded but appreciated work in this ongoing series. As world affairs editor, John Simpson recently suggested that he’d never encountered a more troubling year than 2025. Given his reports on Iran and Greenland, it’s hard to imagine he’s feeling reassured by 2026 so far. PH
Film choice
Shadow of a Doubt (Alfred Hitchcock, 1943), 11am, Film4
This is the connoisseur’s choice of Hitchcock films, and the master of suspense himself picked it, on multiple occasions, as his own personal favourite. The story concerns Charlotte “Charlie” Newton (Teresa Wright), a teenage girl whose life in the idyllic small town of Santa Rosa, California is safe but dull until her charismatic, namesake relative (Joseph Cotten) comes to stay. Uncle Charlie is seemingly fun and generous, and takes a special interest in his young niece. He appears to be the perfect house guest, in fact. Except for all that ranting about “rich widows”.
