Sofia Coppola’s Bill Murray Christmas jumper might be promotional, but it’s still the coolest sweater of the season

In the stroke of one publicity shot, Sofia Coppola gives a masterclass in the tricky art of Christmas jumper wearing. It’s flawless. Let’s examine just how she did that and what can we learn from the queen of grown-up cool.

First, the subject matter counts. She’s promoting A Very Murray Christmas, which she has directed and which premieres on Netflix on Friday. Murray is both her mate and his face itself is cult. It’s a situation that could be hard to replicate for us norms, but it tells us that you need something a little arch/knowing/meta, not a cutsey reindeer to make the knitwear sing.

Second, she’s gone oversized, which suggests the knit isn’t overly thought out, she’s just pulled it on without agonising about whether she looks too jolly. The lesson: go up two sizes.

Third, she’s wearing it with no makeup and jeans. In other words, she’s downdressing the hell out of it. Receding the kitsch factor as much as possible. Easy to follow suit. The final lesson from Coppola on Christmas jumpers is a fairly easy: bit of a sneer helps.
