If the 15-second sample of Writing’s on the Wall is any indication of the rest of the track, Bond purists will be pleased to discover that Sam Smith’s official Spectre single stays true to classic cinematic themes from the 60s.
The soul singer has shared a short clip of his song for the latest James Bond film, featuring a soaring string section. According to Smith’s accompanying message, it will gets its first official airing on 25 September.
The track, a co-creation with Smith’s long-time collaborator, Jimmy Napes, took the Grammy winner just 20 minutes to write back in January – the fastest he had ever written a song.

In other news, Smith recently spoke about his “musical accident” involving Tom Petty’s 1989 hit I Won’t Back Down. The singer, who now shares royalties for the song Stay With Me with Petty after similarities between the songs were acknowledged at the start of this year, said he refuses to listen to the Petty original.
“I am 23 years old. Tom Petty’s song came out way before I was born and still, to this day – people don’t know this – I actually haven’t listened to the song,” he told GQ.
“I refuse to listen to it. Even now I won’t listen to it.”
He added: “There are only so many notes on a piano … We were just unfortunate that it happened, but there was no bad intention.”
