It’s been lambasted as bellicose and jingoistic, but American Sniper has nonetheless become the most successful war movie ever in mere weeks, having taken over $316.2m at the box office worldwide.

Now the film’s producers the Weinstein company intend to capitalise on American audiences’ new-found appetite for patriotic battle films by adapting another sniper’s memoir for a five-part TV series.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Weinstein will take on Nicholas Irving’s The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers.

Irving, was the first African American sniper in his battalion. He served in Afghanistan and in a four-month period in 2009, chalked up 33 kills, earning the nickname the Reaper.

In a statement, film producer Harvey Weinstein said: “The Reaper is a gripping story about a great American soldier that we are so proud to be a part of. Nick Irving’s true bravery and heroism will make for some of the most riveting television ever seen and inspire patriotism in anyone who experiences it.”

Directed by Clint Eastwood, American Sniper has just broken US box office records for Super Bowl weekend. The adaptation of the Irving memoir will begin filming this summer.
