Ad break: Aldi goes Aussie, biting satire from Canal Digital and homely stuff from Airbnb

This week’s roundup features Aldi helping to win round some suspicious Scandinavians, the dangers of missing cult series and how home is where the heart is

Brrrrrrrrrr …

Aldi: “Aussie Christmas” (Starts at 00:06) – Australia

A young man from a small Nordic village returns from Australia with unlikely tales of how they celebrate Christmas down under, and incurs the wrath of his community’s elders … until the wonderful food from Aldi demonstrates that there’s wisdom in the Aussie approach.
Agency: BMF (Australia)
Director: Gary Freedman (Glue Society)

Canal Digital: “The Silver Hand” (Starts at 02:09) – Norway

Let this ad be a lesson to us all about the dangers of missing out on essential TV series. No one wants to be a social outcast, unable to join in with the catchphrases that bond people together. Think how you feel about anyone who doesn’t know who Heisenberg is, or why The Wire can be likened to the works of Tolstoy. Will you care if their leg gets bitten off by a shark as a consequence of their ignorance? Of course not.
Agency: Try (Oslo)
Director: Bart Timmer

Guinness: “Bill” (Starts at 03:23) – UK

This touching film for Guinness revolves around Bill McClaren – the legendary rugby commentator whose own playing career was cut short by a diagnosis of tuberculosis the day before he was due to play for his country. McClaren became a commentator whose voice came to personify the sport he loved and this is a lovely reminder of a much missed icon.

GameStop: “Revolutionary” (Starts at 04:32) – USA

This amusing advert from the US has a shrieking revolutionary running away from the scene of an ambush towards an officer on horseback, who asks in alarm what has happened. “An assassin with a spear – akakak!” wails the revolutionary, jabbing with his hand to demonstrate the lethal quality of said spear, which, it is revealed, gamers get free when they pre-order Assassin’s Creed: Unity from GameStop.
Agency: The Richards Group (Dallas)
Director: Richard Farmer

AirBnB: “Wall and Chain” (Starts at 05:060) – Germany

This advert from Germany offers a compelling reason for using Airbnb. Not only will you avoid the cold detachment of a hotel in favour of the warmth of a family home, there’s the possibility of connecting with the people whose homes you stay in or – as in the case of the true story told here – reconnecting with someone meaningful from your past.
Agency: VCCP (Berlin)
