Warwick Davis is set to make a return to Star Wars more than 30 years after he appeared as Wicket the Ewok in 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

The British actor appears in a new video on the official Star Wars YouTube titled Will Warwick Davis Appear in Star Wars: Episode VII? In it he jokes about the length of time it has taken Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams to ask him back to the long-running space saga. Davis then takes a call from Abrams himself asking him to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII and the news is confirmed via a riff on the famous opening crawl.

Aficionados will be aware that Return of the Jedi was not the actor’s last Star Wars venture. He also appeared as Wald, a friend of the young Anakin Skywalker, in 1999’s poorly received prequel trilogy opener The Phantom Menace, and reprised his role as Wicket on TV in 1984’s The Ewok Adventure and 1985’s Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. The actor’s role this time around remains unconfirmed.

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently shooting in London at Pinewood Studios. The new film will see Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford returning to the classic roles of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo from the original trilogy. New cast members include established stars Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Max Von Sydow, John Boyega and Andy Serkis, who were all confirmed by studio Disney in April, as well as British newcomers Daisy Ridley, Pip Andersen and Christina Chong. Abrams’s film is due for release in December next year.
