Reading on mobile? Watch The Punk Syndrome here
Blasting onto day three of our New View season comes The Punk Syndrome, the angry Finnish documentary about learning-disabled band Pertti Kurikka's Name Day. It really is extraordinary stuff: four middle-aged men who are not the most obvious rocker material raging against the machine in an undeniably impressive way.
The Observer's Philip French was a fan, calling it "a very likable, relaxed film", while Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw wrote that "the film makes a tacit but eloquent case for punk being a great, liberating musical medium... there's a refusenik genius in one song's roar of nihilist anger against the pedicurists who cut their toenails". And if you want a taster for it, here's a clip that perfectly captures the band's raw energy.
Once the dust has settled, come back tomorrow for a gentle follow-up: a profile of stop-motion effects legend Ray Harryhausen.
