Midnight Son – review

There's an attempt to inject a dose of plausible realism into this vampire romp, but it doesn't quite come off, writes Andrew Pulver

Yet another tortured-emo vampire movie, but there's an attempt to inject a dose of plausible realism into proceedings, rather than Twilight's leaden coffee-table stylings. Zak Kilberg plays Jacob, an anemic blood-guzzler who insists he has some sort of sunlight-related skin disorder but is reduced to night work as a security guard and scoring blood packs from rogue A&E nurses. In truth, there's a good idea here – the vampire as artistic self-hater – but the film never quite reconciles the histrionic demands of the genre with the down'n'dirty texture it's seeking to create.
