Slippery … In the Dark Half Photograph: film company handout

A snappy, slippery elder sibling to Rufus Norris's estate drama Broken, In the Dark Half unfolds in a suburbia of secret forest dens and damaged single dads, tear-smudged teens and people called things like "Filthy". The difference is that it's concerned with spooking, as well as moving: our subject is the possible haunting of a babysitter whose young charge dies in her care. As a calling card for director Alastair Siddons, it's polished and impressive. As an experience, it requires slightly more patience than it consistently rewards.
