The Resident – review

Atmospheric lighting and Christopher Lee lend a frisson to an otherwise run-of-the-mill horror flick, writes Philip French

Love, don't live here any more: Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilary Swank in run-of-the-mill horror film The Resident. Photograph: xxx

The eponymous resident is the film's producer, Hilary Swank playing a young doctor at a New York hospital who rents a suspiciously cheap flat in a run-down, once grand building overlooking Brooklyn Bridge, managed by the personable Jeffrey Dean Morgan. His elderly grandfather (our own Christopher Lee) appears to be the only other inhabitant, and the place turns out to be as comfortable as a Transylvania castle or the Bates motel. It's a conventional thriller, short on originality and red herrings but atmospherically lit by Guillermo Navarro, who won an Oscar for his cinematography on Pan's Labyrinth.
