The Ward – review

John Carpenter's first film for nearly a decade – another retro-horror flick – will add little to his reputation. By Philip French

John Carpenter's first film for nearly a decade is set in an understaffed, thinly populated Oregon asylum in the 1970s, the decade when he initially made his reputation with cheap horror movies. It's another retro-horror flick like Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island and Andrew Shortell's Psych: 9, where the hospital is not all it seems to be and the chief shrink is British, in this case Jared Harris. It adds little to Carpenter's reputation.
