SoulBoy

A 70s-based drama about a van driver who finds himself through northern soul is strictly for nostalgia fans, writes Philip French

Shot on location in the Potteries, this nostalgia trip to the mid-1970s stars the likable Martin Compston, who sheds his Scottish accent to play a delivery van driver from Stoke who (in the manner of Saturday Night Fever's Tony Manero) finds a way out of his dead end life through northern soul music, most especially as experienced during all-nighters at Wigan's legendary Casino. It's a corny film, strictly for fans, some of whom, now fiftysomethings, appear at the end to recall the old days at what was once voted "the world's best disco" in America's Keyboard magazine.
