Martina Gusman, the director's wife, is convincingly bruised and bewildered as a pregnant, Argentinian, middle-class woman convicted of killing her lover and bearing his child in a grim jail. There are some effective scenes (among them a big Christmas party in the mothers' wing with fireworks and Santa Claus joining the armed guards on the ramparts) and it's less exploitative than most films of this kind.
