Private Property

Philip French: A depressing family drama in which a divorced couple fight for the allegiance of their sons

Joachim Lafosse's depressing Private Property is Belgian fare of a more predictable kind, an earnest family drama in which a divorced couple fight for the allegiance of their teenage twin sons and the two boys quarrel constantly with each other. There are long, static takes of people bickering over the dinner table, the camera always lingers after characters have left the scene and for no satisfactory reason the picture ends in medias res. Isabelle Huppert, looking tired and middle-aged, is impressive as always.
