The Advertising Standards Authority has censured internet provider Wanadoo over its advertising for a super-fast broadband service available to less than 5% of the UK population.

Competitors to Wanadoo, including BT and Tiscali, and WCRS, the advertising agency of Bulldog, joined members of the public in criticising the adverts, which they said failed to make clear the limited availability of the "8 Meg" broadband service. The service reaches only 4.675% of the population.

The ASA found Wanadoo's press and TV adverts in breach of the advertising code and ordered the company to change its TV commercials before showing them again.

Wanadoo told the ASA it was rolling out the 8 Meg broadband service from October and that its adverts included the words "subject to availability" and "up to eight meg" to avoid misleading viewers.

A Wanadoo spokesman said the company had altered its advertising.

"Our promise is, and always has been, to give customers the fastest speed that their line can currently handle, with a free upgrade to the faster speeds once their local exchange has been upgraded by Wanadoo," he said.
