Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr and his wife, producer Susan Downey, are to develop – through their Team Downey production company – a politically inspired film revolving around a series of televised presidential debates.
According to Variety, Team Downey has commissioned writer Bill Dubuque to work on the script; Dubuque is credited co-writer on The Judge, a previous Team Downey production on which Downey took the lead role and won a People’s Choice award.
Few details have been released of the proposed project, but Variety have reported it is a “dramedy” and “is set in the high-stakes backdrop of three presidential debates where millions of dollars and months of campaigning come down to 270 mins of highly scrutinised political theatre”. There is no word on director or cast.
Susan Downey worked as a production executive at Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures, before taking her first full producer credit on the Halle Berry horror film Gothika, where she met Downey. The two were married in 2005, and set up Team Downey in 2010 in conjunction with Warner Bros. Among their projects in development are Chasing Phil, a true-life account of conman Phil Kitzer, and a feature version of a Black Mirror episode called The Entire History of You.
