Spoiler alert! For those who haven't yet seen Marvel's latest superhero effort, Captain America, you might just want to avoid watching the new teaser for The Avengers which has just been posted online. As well as showing us a very brief first look at the various members of the much-hyped comic-book combo – some in costume – the video offers a snippet from the last few minutes of Captain America, revealing that … well, you'll have to take a gander yourself.

For those not in the picture, The Avengers brings together various heroes who have appeared in their own movies over the past few years, along with a few who haven't. There's Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Chris Evans's Captain America and Mark Ruffalo's The Hulk, along with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye.

Superhero stories with multiple protagonists haven't really been done on the big screen before, so there's palpable excitement about The Avengers in fanboy circles. Marvel has also done an excellent job of introducing the various combatants over the past couple of years: delivering two well-made superhero movies in the last year alone in the shape of Thor and Captain America. But can The Avengers, under the watchful eye of director Joss Whedon, suitably round things off? We'll have to wait until May 2012 to find out.

In the meantime, if you blinked and missed the various members of the gang, Empire has kindly screengrabbed stills of them all here. One thought: if the Hulk is a fully paid-up member of The Avengers, rather than a villain, as the trailer would suggest, how are they going to go about controlling him? The not-so-jolly green giant doesn't exactly scream "disciplined soldier".
